This time of year...

Updated: Dec 13, 2022

For many, this time of year is filled with excitement, anticipation, and joy. For others, this time of year can bring on a different set of emotions such as loneliness, anxiousness, or even grief. If you find that you are experiencing some of the latter emotions, consider a few tips to help you through this time:

  • Don't isolate! I know, I know easier said than done right? Sometimes simple gestures can make a difference. Consider doing something that you enjoy: take a drive, make a playlist of music that you like, plan an outing with someone you enjoy spending time with. Give someone a call that you've been thinking about and wanted to catch up with. Go see a movie; maybe a comedy or whatever your favorite genre is!

  • Give yourself grace! We hear this phrase often now days, but it is useful. Don't beat yourself about how you feel. Remember you are human and you are allowed to feel; you do not have to feel guilty about that.

  • Don't be afraid to vocalize what you need! Maybe you're always the strong friend. You don't like to ask for help. You don't want to come off as needy. You take pride in doing things on your own. Remember at some point in our lives we need others. Embrace the vulnerability and just ask!

  • Practice Gratitude! As long as we're breathing, we have something to be grateful for. Even if it seems small, reflect on the things that you can be thankful for. Write it down so that you can add to the list as you reflect. It may even bring you joy to do something for someone else that you know they would be grateful for.

If you are someone who enjoys this time of year but know someone who may be challenged, check on them. A text message, phone call, or video chat can go a long way and may just be the shift they need.

Be safe. Love yourself. Love each other.
